SINTEF is a Norwegian non-profit multidisciplinary research foundation with international top-level expertise in a wide range of technological and scientific disciplines, medicine and the social sciences. It employs 2100 people. More than 90% of its annual turnover derives from contract research for industry and the public sector in Norway and internationally, and it receives minimal state funding (around 6%). SINTEF has a broad basis in development of measurement and real-time middleware solutions for industry and robotics. In I3DS they will take leadership for the interface of the sensor suite to the overall system, and carry out lab-bench integration testing of the sensor system. Furthermore, they will use their experience within optics development and data analysis to give significant contributions to the optical design of the illumination system and integrate this with the relevant cameras.


Terma has more than 30 years of experience providing systems, software and services to the space sector. A staff of 150 is employed with space systems development and operations. They are based at Terma premises in Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands and Italy as well as numerous customer sites. Terma has activities in all phases of a mission life cycle - from the early feasibility studies for missions through their realization and operation, and finally to the exploitation of the results of the mission. Terma delivers systems and products from a broad product range, for example Star Trackers at the equipment level, power conditioning at the subsystem level, and complete satellites. Examples of the types of systems that Terma has provided for the Space Segment: Small Satellites and platforms, Star Trackers, Power Electronics, On-Board Software, Electrical Ground Support Equipment. For the I3DS project Terma will be providing a Star Tracker Camera Optical Head and provide support for the integration of the Optical Head into INSES.



Cosine develops and builds measurement systems for its customers. These find use in scientific, industrial, medical, environmental, energy, agri/food, security, semiconductor and space applications, with customers ranging from small high-tech companies to the European Space Agency, IBM and EADS. The cosine team consists of 40 highly educated people who develop transparently in close collaboration with the customer. With its broad experience in different technological areas they provide innovative, out-of- the-box measurement solutions. Technologies span the field of applied physics, with extensive experience in spectroscopy, lasers, radiation and 3D imaging systems.

In the I3DS, Cosine is responsible for the camera building block.



PIAP Space is a spin-off company for space sector activities, set up by PIAP Institute who is an active global market player offering industrial and counter-terrorism robotics solutions. Our team has conducted space projects for almost 10 years. We are focused in developing competences and technologies in areas like: Mechanical Ground Support Equipments, Mechanics and Robotic Manipulators & End-Effectors for On Orbit Satellite Servicing.

In the I3DS project PIAP Space is responsible for contact sensors and force/torque sensors development, as well for mechanical configuration & housing.



 Hertz Systems has been operating for almost 30 years, specializing in space systems, military tele-informatics systems, GNSS technology and security systems. Starting with security technology, Hertz Systems has expanded into dedicated military and space technology systems. As the first European company, Hertz designed and implemented a military HGPST T GPS receiver with a cryptographic module. At present, Hertz Systems is one of the largest companies in the Polish space sector. Hertz Systems is also part of the consortium to build the first Polish SAT-AIS- PL commercial satellite and is taking part in the development of the Galileo system. The company carries out projects for the European Space Agency, the European GNSS Agency, the European Commission, the Polish Space Agency and the European Defense Agency. Within the frame of Integrated 3D Sensor Suite project, Hertz Systems LTD is responsible for developing two sensors – radar and lidar.



Cranfield University is an entirely postgraduate, world-renowned research-based university in the UK, specialising in science, engineering, technology and management. It consists of two campuses: the main campus is located in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, and the second is located within the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom at Shrivenham, Oxfordshire. The work carried out in the Unmanned Autonomous Systems Laboratory (UASL), which is part of the CEW.

Here, a number of research projects have been conducted in the fields of Space, Commercial Aviation, Agriculture, Autonomous Transportation, Utilities and Services, and of course in Defence. The UASL is home to a number of autonomous vehicle test platforms that include quadrocoptors, mobile robots and various camera and sensor platforms that enable us to carry out practical research, development and testing of innovative autonomous systems across a wide range of applications. We also have a large laboratory complete with industry standard motion capture systems that enable ground truth vehicle trajectory data to be obtained and used in the validation of autonomous navigation systems.
